With the Scandinavian trend for Hygge the idea of bringing a romantic Swiss cabin feel to a bedroom has become attractive, particularly during the long cold Winter months of lockdown.

Many elements of home decor will bring this sense of warmth and well being to a room. The most obvious thing we associate with a log cabin is wood. A stunning wooden floor covered in faux animal skin rugs or having wood panelling on the walls will make the space feel cosy and protected from the cold outside. Low level lighting needs to be considered . A warm glow for bedside lights with a gentle pendant above is enough. The fabrics of the lampshade should speak of natural fibres, linens and cotton. Plain colours in creams, browns or pale lemon. Look for a hanging pendant in wood as in a Tom Radfield light or in a gentle woven material such as rattan.

Crisp white linen should be topped with a dark navy or brown thick blanket with simple matching cushions. Then on top of that a faux thick throw at the end of the bed should lend itself to this snuggly environment.

Distressed wooden furniture as bedside cupboards will lend a touch of authenticity to the rustic look. Maisons du Monde have a number of suitable bedside tables and other pieces to complement this style.

Lastly an old small sofa in a cotton tickling fabric or a chair in a faded mustard velvet will finish you scheme off. Then you are ready to hibernate January and February waiting for the arrival of Spring in March.

A wooden floor is a delight. It adds texture and variety to a room. The different tones of this most natural product are many and various. You will find a type and colour that will compliment your home without a doubt.

Many companies now offer reclaimed wood as an option. The patina of age and time lends a softer look to the floor which resonates with the past and lends a sense of permanence to a room design.

Parquet, which was the flooring of choice in the thirties, has had a major revival. No more Terry and June suburban jokes but now the beloved of Hipsters and urban trendies. The chevron pattern is pleasing and will bring style and interest, especially when teamed with today’s trend of dark shades rather than the ginger tones of the past.

With under floor heating you will need to look for engineered wood flooring to allow the heat to be transferred without warping the wood. There are plenty of good attractive options in this range and many good flooring companies sell it.

The key thing is to choose an excellent floor layer to put the wood down. The floor has to be prepared properly or else all you dreams will end in floor boards lifting and looking sad. This rarely happens but as with other trades it is best to have a recommendation of someone good and not be tempted to take a one man band with no track record.

As we approach autumn we think of making our homes cosy and welcoming using warm and sympathetic materials.

Try thinking of bringing the outside into the home by using the themes of rural life, the natural products from the trees and animals around us as inspiration to decorate your home.

In this way wood provides both a serene and rural ambience and a practical style that will enhance any home.

It is surprising how many ways in which wood can be incorporated into a design scheme.

The obvious way to use this calm, natural product is on the floors. A solid wood floor will give you a hardwearing and clean surface that will last a life time if it is maintained. The choice of oak, beech, walnut and pine means that there is something for everyone. The glow of the wood gives a room a depth and calm like no other surface.

Wooden furniture can be made comfortable and chic by using soft pliable materials with it as a contrast. A wooden frame with a velvet or cow hide seat will be funky and modern as well as stylish.

In smaller ways, wooden accessories are now available. The sculptural wooden lights of Tom Raffield provide elegance and charm. They link with the outside space as they are made from purely natural materials and lend an openness to a kitchen space and an interesting dappled light effect at night.

A rustic environment can be luxurious and so by using the wooden theme with the softer textures of fur, wool and linen, you can embrace the hues of autumn and snuggle up in the house of your dreams.
