My image of chandeliers was more Beauty and the Beast by Disney and I felt them to be overwhelming and dated.

Suddenly a range of much more sculptural overhead lighting has been created and the chandelier become funky and artistic.

A good example of this modern industrial hanging pendant / chandelier is from Buster and Punch. It’s a mixture of bulb and shaded lights that would add some modernity to a Victorian hallway.

In a similar vein the glass globes of Fritz Henson will again be a far cry from the old school crystal drops . This bulb based chandelier gives discreet colour to a room without being overbearing.

Graham and Green go for a bit more glamour in their Deco Beatrice chandelier. Available in two sizes this will give a more modern room sophistication and ritz.

For something bright and statement look no further than Rockett St George starburst style spiky chandelier. This will be a taking point for all your visitors as well as lighting up your life.

The most dramatic and rich colour in the metallic spectrum is gold. It has been valued for its glitter and durability throughout the ages.

This is an element which works best as an accessory or a contrasting feature within a decorative plan.

When used in lighting design, it gives a textural contrast to the fabric of the shades and allows interesting shapes to be created, ranging from floral motifs to abstract sculptural shapes.

As a light fitting, gold can add reflection and warmth to a room. The lamp base in this tone will look dramatic using a red or black shade to offset any vulgarity. The material can be intricately fashioned to produce unique patterns and engravings. Gold light fittings add variety and class to any room.

Some companies have used gold very imaginatively; Seletti have produced a quirky light with a gold mouse holding a bulb. This is both intriguing and practical.

John Lewis also have used gold in their stylish Montserrat lights. These will brighten up your house both literally and decoratively with their palm leaf shape.

Tom Dixon also uses gold in their melt range to shine a radiance and glamour in any room.

Vaughan lighting and Porta Romana both have used gold to create beautiful lights.

The Beatrice and Asante wall lights by Porta Romana are good examples of the richness of this metal used in an imaginative and sumptuous way.

In these fittings gold never fails to shine bright and true.

The look that Louise Swarbrick Design is known for regarding interior decor is that of mixing the modern with the historic.

Working in many period houses, we have been able to enhance the architectural features and provide a light airy feel that we associate with today’s every day living.

Owning an older property can bring its challenges as often the adaptation of existing plumbing and electrics to accommodate the demands of modern appliances and expectations can be a costly experience.

Nevertheless it brings rewards and a personality that are not often provided by a new build.

We usually tackle the project by providing a sympathetic colour palette based on pale shades that meld together to give a seamless sense of space.

This can be used as a backdrop to more dramatic elements in the wallpapers and fabrics chosen to enliven the scheme. Colour and texture in these elements allow the client to bring their unique style to the house. Against the neutral background, brighter designs can be used to add drama and fun.

The use of both contemporary furniture and lighting, juxtaposed with antique pieces. is a house style we are proud of. This way the past and the present will sit together happily. Things from your life history need not look out of place in your newly refurbished home.

We bring the new to the old and soften the modern with the past.
