Southern Comfort

The bright colours of the South American continent will add a vibrant cheerful tone to any living area in your home. The paintings of Frieda Kahlo although rather disturbing are full of the lively tones you should use in this decorating scheme.

Look for bold stripes and geometric patterns in rugs and throws. Andrew Martin uses these designs in their fabric in quite a subtle way. The Mayan influence and the Aztec prints can be found in several different materials. Osborne and Little have used the influence of Argentina in their Bukhara fabric, the lovely jute and cotton mix, comes in five colour ways each fresh and appealing.

Thinking of the floor, Urban outfitters have a number of tribal rugs with lime greens, pinks and oranges so reminiscent of the Peruvian tradition. These would look particularly effective on a dark wood floor.

The heat of Mexico can be referenced by choosing occasional chairs in a bright shade of orange. A classic 1950s shape in a tangerine or melon needs a quirky cushion from Anthropologies. The Botanical Musings cushion featuring a llama is such an accessory for this style to be carried off.

Warm pinks and browns are equally sympathetic colours for this theme. Cushions with large images of flowers or indeed cacti would look well on a large leather Chesterfield – the use of leather being totally in keeping with this look.

Being bold does not mean lacking in sophistication. Use the tones of the earth, sun and foliage of the Amazon with the patterns of the ancient civilisations with a dash of Acapulco and you will capture the spirit of South America.
