Kitchen Island Design & Ideas

Indigo design, interior design firm in Cambridge, has created a number of different islands for their clients in many different settings. The most usual place to find an island is in the kitchen. The island has replaced the need for a kitchen table. It is a space saver in kitchen design as it can accommodate sinks and hobs as well as drawers for pans and cutlery and crockery if necessary.

The island needs to be both practical and pleasing to look at.

For that reason we at Indigo design spend a long time with our clients discussing the appropriate shape and storage usage for their needs.

Indigo design Cambridge was asked to re design an old dated kitchen in a large farmhouse. The room was very large and had an enormous gap in the middle between the two preparation areas. It seemed an ideal place to site a large island unit.

We decided to use an oblong shape in dark walnut. This unit would house the hob and cooking area, but would also serve as a sociable table space with accommodation for seating.

To do this we made the island long and in two heights. The second higher level would be where family and guests could sit on stools and join in the cooking or just sit and eat.

We used Corian to cover the main working units but then chose a chunkier wood grained work surface for the second top.

Over this we hung some lovely white glass spheres. The unit contained subtle lighting anyway. So the cooking could be done either with a subdued tone or the use of brighter lights.

The room looked less cavernous and more friendly our client was thrilled.
